Experts explain the benefits of massage

Massage feels good, does the body a lot of good, and on top of that massage has many benefits. What benefits does massage bring? When should you turn to a masseur with back problems, and when to a manual therapist/chiropractor? Experts share explanations and advice.

Massage is well suited for general muscle maintenance

Physiotherapist, manual therapist/chiropractor and honorary president of the Estonian Wushu Kungfu Federation Priit Kõrve shares recommendations and advice on when to choose a manual therapist or chiropractor and when a masseur instead.

„I recommend visiting a masseur for general muscle maintenance when the muscles are tense. For most people, to avoid problems, a massage once a month can be recommended; for representatives of some professions and fields, even once a week,” he advises. Kõrve has a massage once a week – because his work involves a large specific load. There are different types of massage, some of which are also suitable simply for relaxation and for relieving mental tension.

A manual therapist/chiropractor should mainly be consulted for back, neck and joint problems. Kõrve certainly also recommends checking the qualifications of the specialist before a visit. „Neck, chest and lower back pain and many muscle tensions begin from some functional block, and releasing it is the work of a manual therapist and chiropractor. As a rule you do not get rid of them with massage alone; you may get mild relief, but if the blocks in the joints, back and neck are not released, no lasting result remains,” the chiropractor explains.

Generally speaking, when at the spa, for example, it is quite good to have a massage for additional relaxation, but if it is an acute or long-term problem, it would be sensible to establish the right recovery/treatment plan and find the cause of the problem. He recommends consulting a manual therapist/chiropractor, a doctor or a physiotherapist.

Massage has many benefits

Marta Kislov, creator of therapeutic treatment, masseur, baby swimming instructor and counsellor for breastfeeding and new parents, considers massage very important for maintaining the wellbeing of body and mind.

According to Kislov, massage has many benefits:

  • Muscle maintenance for the body – massage gives rest to muscles, joints and tissues and helps restore their normal position and elasticity.
  • Massage stimulates the metabolism and improves its functioning.
  • During a massage, dead skin cells are removed, which ensures more elastic and radiant skin.
  • It relieves pain that may be caused by working postures, injuries, excessive training and so on.
  • Thai massage is highly recommended for people whose joints are stiff because of their work and lifestyle, to get them moving again.
  • Stronger health through supporting the immune system and speeding up lymph circulation.
  • A reduction in stress and anxiety through rest.
  • Improved capacity for work, thanks to the aforementioned rest and relaxation.
  • A noticeable improvement in sleep quality.
  • The most important thing is to find time for yourself. Take a moment in which you care only about yourself and about your health and wellbeing.

Everyone will find a suitable massage at Elamus Spa. The selection includes both stronger and more relaxing massages.

  • Classic massage – helps relieve muscle tension, improve muscle elasticity and improve the oxygen supply in the muscles. It has a relaxing effect in both mental and physical tension.
  • Chocolate massage – the senses-arousing chocolate massage is a lightly exfoliating massage and a true delight, as the tempting aroma of chocolate together with a smooth touch creates a rich atmosphere. Cocoa promotes the production of endorphins, the happiness molecules, and makes the skin silky soft. The massage suits everyone who wants to let their body and mind be pampered; a relaxed state and a good feeling are guaranteed!
  • Hot lava stone massage – lava stone massage is a deeply relaxing treatment, a thousands-of-years-old Chinese healing method carried out with hot lava stones and special oil blends.
During the treatment, previously heated lava stones are placed on the body’s energy points and left there for a few dozen minutes. This is followed by a massage with a body oil containing rose and almond oil.
  • Head and shoulder massage – the shoulders, neck and pressure points on the head are massaged. The massage releases tension in the neck area more effectively and quickly and gives a good feeling. It helps prevent headaches and get rid of them.
  • Aroma massage – aromatherapy creates balance between a person’s body, mind and spirit. The massage uses essential oils that are absorbed into the body through the skin and the airways. The movements of the aroma massage are slow and smooth, which eases psychological tension, relieves stress and relaxes the muscles. A pleasant feeling is guaranteed.
  • Sports massage – sports massage is stronger than classic massage. More stretches and techniques that improve joint mobility are used, in order to prevent and relieve tension that has already developed in the joints.
