Elamus Spa has always stood out for its innovative solutions, and now visitors can experience a spa visit on a completely new level – with the help of a sound concept created especially for Elamus Spa. This is not just a new playlist, but a carefully considered sound solution that shapes the visitor experience from the entrance all the way to the various saunas and relaxation areas. Leaders in their field were involved in creating the sound concept – Dali Kask, music psychologist and the founder of sound design in Estonia, Ikevald Rannap, composer and the project’s creative director, and co-producer Maksim Adel.

Music affects people subconsciously

“Our brain cannot switch sounds off, which is why all the sounds around us affect our mood and how we feel,” explains music psychologist Dali Kask. That is precisely why the aim of Elamus Spa’s new musical solution is to create a sound environment that helps you relax, release tension and let go of everyday life.

Music’s effect on a person can be stimulating or calming, depending on its rhythm, tonality and the relationships between the sounds. Fast, rhythmic music can give energy, while a smooth and calm sound language helps slow the pace and deepen the feeling of relaxation.

When a person listens to music consciously, it can significantly affect their nervous system and general wellbeing. “If you take a moment, put on headphones or simply focus on what you are hearing, you can observe how music affects us. It can help you relax, restore energy and go deeper into self-awareness,” Kask says.

Since a great many different people visit Elamus Spa every day, Elamus Spa wanted to create a complete sound concept that would take different environmental influences into account and create a unified, balanced atmosphere.

The sound world of the four elements – a journey in the symbiosis of music and nature

According to composer and project creative director Ikevald Rannap, Elamus Spa’s new sound solution is not simply background music but a deep journey created specifically for the spa experience, based on the four natural elements – fire, water, earth and air.

“With Elamus Spa we wanted to create an environment that is completely separate, has a healing effect and takes the visitor on a journey, as it were,” Rannap explains.

For the musical solution to fit the spa experience, it was necessary to go deeper than mere mood-setting background music. “Music is not only sound – it is vibration and energy that affects us on a deeper level. If we want the spa experience to be truly healing and calming, we have to consider not only harmonies and melodies but also the energetic level of sound. For this we used a multi-layered approach in which we combined the natural elements and musical creativity,” Rannap says.

Wind instruments, light waterfalls and the murmur of rainwater.

3. The element of earth – grounding and deep

The role of music in the spa experience

Elamus SPA manager Margit Kurn explains that the new sound concept has not been created for the saunas alone – it forms a whole that covers the entire spa experience from beginning to end.

“We want that when a person steps through the door of Elamus Spa, whatever happened to them before arriving at the spa stays behind that door. At reception they are taken into the embrace of the sound language, in the foyer music plays that quietly leads into relaxation, in the changing room the sound background becomes even softer and calmer, and by the time they reach the spa environment the person is already ready for deep rest,” Kurn describes.

Music at Elamus Spa is not random but created specifically for each spa area and sauna, to create the corresponding mood and support how the person feels. “Our aim was to do something special, not to play the usual calming playlists. Our new sound solution helps visitors relax even more, takes them on a journey and brings them into the present moment,” Kurn says.
